Faculty of Animal Science is the youngest faculty in UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada). On September 11, 1955, Faculty of Veterinary UGM was expanded into Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science (FV&AS) UGM. Furthermore, as the public encouragement, in 1964 some lecturers initiated to establish two departments: (1) Department of Veterinary and (2) Department of Animal Science.
Based on the Decree of Deputy Minister of Higher Education dated June 20, 1966 Number 38, starting from September 1, 1966, FV&AS was divided into two faculties: (1) Faculty of Veterinary and (2) Faculty of Animal Science. However, its administrative and academic practices still united with FV&AS. Starting from November 10, 1969, based on the Decree of Minister of Education and Culture dated November 2, 1969 Number: 1449/KT/I/SP/1969, the Faculty of Animal Science UGM was officially established. The establishment was followed by appointing Dean and Secretary of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM and opening the Animal Science Study Program; so that total faculties in UGM were 18 faculties.
Referring to Decree of Director General of Higher Education No.221/DIKTI/Kep/96 dated July 11, 1996, the Animal Science Program consisted of 4 departments: Animal Feed and, Livestock Socio-Economics and Animal Products Technology.
In order to develop educational systems that is able to provide professional skill and to accommodate development of animal production industries, based on the Decree of UGM Rector No.187/P/SK/HT/2006 dated May 1, 2006, we merged the Department of Animal Feed and Nutrition, Animal Production, Livestock Socio-Economics and Animal Products Technology into Undergraduate Program in Animal Science and Industry.
Since 2020, Faculty of Animal Science UGM (FAS-UGM) offers both a regular and international program (International Undergraduate Program in Animal Science and Industry/IUP-ASI). Based on Curriculum 2018 FAS-UGM offers 5 concentrations:
- Animal Nutrition and Feed Science
- Animal Production
- Livestock Regulation and Business
- Animal Product Technology
- Animal Reproduction and Breeding.
The differences between regular program and international program are: 1) IUP-ASI has a separate admission process and tuition category, 2) IUP-ASI set English as its language of instruction, 3) IUP-ASI requires students to take credits at least one of FAS UGM partner universities abroad.
